MEET THE BURGERS #LondonBurgerBash

artist’s model for Golden Patty Award

How bad do the six competitors in the 7/8 April BurgerMonday #LondonBurgerBash at Camden Town Brewery want it? How confident are they of getting the mosts vote?

You might get some idea from reading about their designs for winning the one burger everyone wants most, the one burger you can’t eat: The Golden Patty Award version 2.0 is an original work by artist Lewis Stringer, creator of the Burger Bell Jar.

The half dozen burgers to be served at both the Sunday afternoon and Monday night sessions of the #LondonBurgerBash half marathon are below, in no particular order. The list is followed by beer matches proposed for each burger by Camden Town Brewery’s Head Brewer James Garstang.

Patty & Bun
Piggie Smalls Special Pays Hommage to the Notorious P.I.G.

From the creator of the Ari Gold cheeseburger and Smokey Robinson burger comes the Piggie Smalls:

<<patty, confit Middle White pork belly, double cheese, hot sauce, scratch, ketchup, roasted garlic aioli, smokey P&B mayo, bread & butter pickles & brioche!!! Piggie Smalls is the Wickedest!!!>>
– Joe Grossman

Nanban
Look behind the MasterChef champ & you’ll see a, or rather, The Barbarian

Peek under the bun of Tim Anderson’s The Barbarian burger and you’ll get a very compressed preview of Nanban, his forthcoming Japanese restaurant.

<<Portuguese sweet bread bun, Gochujang-kewpee slaw, short rib-chuck-smoked gamon mince, melty mature Gouda, bacon-shiitake croquete, asazuke pickled onions, katsu sauce>>
– Tim Anderson

Almost Famous

To London with Love,
from Manchester with ‘tude

Beau Myers struggled to make up his burgers between two burgers, each nastier, in a good way, than the next. Here’s his description of and thinking behind his selection, To London with Love (aka Bacon Cubed):

<<Our Almost Famous take on the ultimate burger – exactly what we think you should get from a burger: juicy, dirty and satisfying on every level of taste and texture. A double patty of coarsely ground brisket, chuck & marrow, basted in unctuous butter and topped with A/F burger cheese – this sits on a lightly toasted brioche bun glazed with bacon butter topped with crispy smoked bacon, JD maple butter syrup, BBQ fried onions, frazzles (yes those cheeky bacon crisps we’ve all forgotten we love)…all pulled together with our signature serve of plenty of sauce – BACONNAISE, CHIPOTLE KETCHUP, FAMOUS MUSTARD finished with a few other tricks and treats….this is our gift to you LONDON – it’s what we think a burger should be all about, it’s real, it’s quality and it’s true to the BURGER, hope you love it as much as we do. keep your shiitakes and your truffles and if you serve a burger with a napkin knife and fork expect me to make a mask and stab you x>>
– Beau Myers

Joe Allen
The Joe Allen Secret Burger gets a tune-up

You don’t mess too much with a classic like the off-menu not-so-secret secret burger at Joe Allen, imported from New York’s theatre district to the West End long before London was awash with burgers. But it is appropriate to give it a tune-up every 20 years or so, as Jason Wild’s team has completed just in time for #LondonBurgerBash:

<<The brief was a burger that would tick all the boxes, for young and old, adding fun with flavor, being an all round classic: A lovely ground Angus Beef pattie nice and lean, grilled till perfection, resting on a cream Broiche bun, sliced Spanish beef tomato, Battavia lettuce leaf with maple glazed streaky bacon, mature Cheddar cheese slice, horseradish ketchup, and seasoned mayonnaise.>>
– Jason Wild

Hawksmoor
Out n Out at Camden Town Brewery

You’ve heard of  In-N-Out Burger? You’ve maybe seen Down and Out in Beverly Hills? On 7/8 April Richard Turner of Hawksmoor transports us to the unchartered land of Out n Out:

<<The Out n Out Animal is a mustard fried 160g patty made from 100% pure bred grass fed Aberdeen Angus by Ginger Pig. Served in a demi brioche bun with the mandatory Ogleshield, fried onions and lettuce and accompanied by a half portion of oxtail poutine.>>
– Richard Turner

Mother Flipper

Will Bacon Swiss Flipper Riff Crown Manuel Andrades as New Burger King?

<<Inspiration for this burger comes from the BK Rodeo Burger. It was a childhood favourite of mine but you cant get them anymore (plus burgers in the UK have moved on quite a lot from when I was a kid). So I thought I’d create my own Mother Flipper version. It’s got crispy onion rings, candy bacon, Swiss cheese and a smoky homemade BBQ sauce. Matched with Mother Flipper’s 100% English chuck steak patties and sesame seed brioche bun. It’s simply just a winning combo that evokes cherished childhood memories.>>
– Manuel Andrades

Beer Matches from Camden Town’s Head Brewer James Garstang

Patty & Bun>>USA Hells
Pork and lager are natural bedfellows. Hot sauce, garlic and pickle bounce off the hops nicely.
Nanban>>Pale
Body and caramalt deftly handle the meat, mushroom and Gouda. Fragrant hops intermingle with the slaw and pickles to great effect.
Almost Famous>>Ink
Only beer which could shoulder the punchy meat onslaught. Roast, new world hop and nitrogen acted body combine to man up to this multi-ingredient-mega-burger!
Joe Allen>>Wit
The lemon in the wit matches the freshness of the tomato and lettuce, while counterbalancing the heat of the horseradish. The smooth malt backbone is a perfect foil for the cream brioche bun.
Hawksmoor>Hells Unfiltered
The body of our unfiltered hells matches this burger perfectly, while washing away the oxtail poutine, leaving you hungry for another bite.
Mother Flipper>Hells
Our classic lager greets this burger like an old friend with open arms. Enjoy these natural partners with reckless abandon!
