The 2½-finger limit is a good rule of thumb for burgers. Any thicker and they become difficult to handle and harder still to pass through your open mouth.

So how did the group get on? Most managed the burger’s heft as efficiently as the commendably sturdy toasted bun that cushioned it. All the burgers were devoured in their entirely, or so the forgiving waiter said. If there was one woman who did not manage to clear her plate, no one was pointing fingers.
