For most of the burgermonday dozen, the special menu chef John Cadieux put together for the 21 June meatup at Goodman amounted to a festival of beefy tempations: 4 mammoth burgers, 3 of them burgermonday exclusives.
For the 1 or perhaps 2 food neurotics in the group (hint: they tend to be of New York extraction), however, the menu inspired only fear and indecision. Choosing, for example, The Goodman (aged Cheddar, bacon, mushroom, onions) would mean passing up The American Disaster (a double with processed yellow cheeese), The Gourmet (grilled portabello mushroom, Stilton and fried onions) and, most troubling of all, something called The Burger Surprise.
Cadieux understands irrational hangups. He’s from Canada, which isn’t all that far from New York. Regardless, after leading us on a tour of the kitchen and its priceless steak reserves the empathetic chef took this extraordinary step: he would send out an additions 6 burgers so everyone got to try all 4 varieties. How can you not love this man?
So what was the Burger Surprise? A classic burger filled with foie gras and duck confit. Imagine having to return home with the knowledge you turned that baby down. It pains me just to think about it.
