Join me, Dino Joannides of Melograno Alimentari and James Hoffmann of Square Mile Coffee Roasters as we meet for a Christmas season CoffeeSaturday pop-up at London’s most uncompromising Italian deli. In the holiday spirit, a few good friends of young&foodish will compete against me in a panettone bake-off.
To help you through the difficult take of judging these homemade versions of the cupola-crowned cake that is Italy’s favourite Christmas sweet, Square Mile’s Hoffmann, who, in a previous life, was World Barista Champion, promises to bring and brew a fun and unusual espresso well paired with panettone.
Melograno has been barred from entering the panettone it has selected and sourced from a small artisan maker in Piedmont. It was disqualified from the bake-off through a technicality: The panettone’s mother yeast is over a century old whereas, as everyone knows, all CoffeeSaturday competitions have a 99-year-old mother yeast limit.
Despair not: You will be free – and, I should add, well advised – to take home and taste Melograno’s Pietmontese panettone after the bake-off. To that end, Melograno will offer it at a 25 percent discount* (£18, down from £24) to all CoffeeSaturday ticket holders.
As for ordering one of the homemade-in-the-UK panettones entered in the bake-off you will have to negotiate directly with the respective competitor, to his or her delight I’m sure.
* Offer good for one panettone on the date of the event only.
