Why do you love steak frites?

Update: Toby Rhind-Tutt – @the_rts on twitter – wins #steakfrites love competition. See the entry that won he and his wife an invitation to an epic steak frites tasting dinner at Racine Restaurant in London.

steak frites id copy 200x181 Why do you love steak frites? To steer us to the best cuts of beef for the ultimate steak frites we have London butcher Darragh O’Shea. To show those cuts off to best advantage we have chef Henry Harris of Racine.  The invaluable insights of these Knightsbridge neighbours are now captured in a series of 6 meaty web videos: Steak Frites – Mastering the Cuts.

You risk being aroused by watching these beefy close-ups, but you don’t have to be left unsatisfied. Harris will prepare his three favourite steak dishes – onglet aux échalottes, filet au poivre, côte de boeuf with béarnaise – and serve them together, along with golden chips, at special steak frites tasting dinners arranged exclusively with youngandfoodish in the private dining room of Racine.

The videos leave open a single question: what is it about this classic combination of meat and potatoes that makes it the beefcake attraction of bistro and brasserie menus? Why does our longing gaze keep returning to the words “steak frites”? Why, when we resist that temptation, do our eyes fall enviously on the plate of the companion who didn’t? Why do we so readily defy dining decorum, reflexively reaching across the table to pinch a single frite with barenaked fingers?

Do you have the answer? Can you express it in 125 characters or less? If so, be sure to enter our “why you love steak frites?” twitter competition for a chance to win an invitation for you and a guest to the premiere of the youngandfoodish 3-steak tasting dinners on Monday, 22nd March at Racine.
