Very entertaining post!

I've often wondered about this. It might be my Canadian upbringing, but I was raised with a healthy respect for lines, so to speak. It always seemed more proper to me that I wait until after I actually have my drink before taking a seat. Of course, I also send my family to a table, if possible, instead of needlessly crowding the line. You've brought up many questions. We could write a full essay on this stuff!

I love this story. I'm a Portlander but now living in the Bay area and always am surprised at the etiquette in a busy and crowded coffee shop, aren't we supposed to go there to enjoy coffee, relax, read (do quiet things)... and it just seems like those people would be polite! Sheesh.

Mehrunnisa - I think I may have been a little hard on my English wife. The boring sophomores did arrive ahead of us. In a fairer world, she might argue, open tables would be distributed on a FIFS (first in, first seated), not to the first to throw his or her coat over a chair.

I will be heading across said pond tomorrow with my NYC girlfriend to visit her family.
I will look out vigilantly to seek this in person :)

Thanks for the tip as well, my coat will at the ready to hold a table, not that I would ever imagine to claim a spot that was not mine.

Great little story that too

Regards,
